Alan holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Andrew Jackson University, a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science Management from Southern Illinois University, and an Associates of Applied Science in Fire Science Technology from the College of Lake County.

Alan retired in 2014 after being a career firefighter/paramedic with the Wauconda Fire Protection District in Illinois.

Alan and his wife, Deborah, now live in the Okanogan Highlands of North Central Washington State. 

WilderNest, as their homestead is known, is an off-grid, 512 square foot home. It is currently powered by 8-300 watt Renesola Solar Panels. Power is stored in a 24 volt battery bank. A 1600 watt wind turbine was also installed in the Spring of 2016 as well as 2-300 Renesola Solar Panels for the greenhouse.
